Three months later
For the first time since Markâs funeral, I met my girlfriends for lunch at the country club. Itâs amazing how much things can change in three months. The last time we met, Page and Trista were married; London and Rhea were divorced. This time, it was the other way around. Sort of.
Last time, I was â¦
I promised myself, I wasnât going to cry in front of them and was determined to fulfill the promise. Weâd been there twenty minutes, and the girls were too self-absorbed to get around to talking about how I was doing. Which was fine by me.
Trista didnât follow through on her threat to vote with her brothers and sell the company that had been in her family for more than a hundred years. Instead, she went a step further and voted with her brothers to have her husband ousted as the CEO.
I choked down a gasp. The others were shocked as well.
Her husband Bill was livid. Trista felt bad about it at first and was going to change her mind about the whole thing. Until her husband moved out of their twenty thousand square foot mansion and into his girlfriendâs apartment.
A girlfriend of five years Trista didnât know he had. To make matters worse, the woman worked at the company and Trista knew her fairly well. The shrew, as Trista called her, was terminated immediately although she threatened to sue for sexual harassment and mightâve won had she not let Bill move in with her. Hard to claim you were harassed when you invite the abuser to live with you.
The whole thing was fascinating, if not sordid.
âHow did you get divorced so fast?â I asked.
âMy daddy made Bill sign a prenup before we got married. I actually forgot all about it. I didnât even read it at the time. Just signed on the dotted line where daddy told me to sign. I was in love. Apparently, the agreement said that if Bill agreed not to contest the prenup, then he got ten-million dollars. If he contested it, he got nothing. I had my attorney offer him twenty and he took it.â
âProbably smart on his part,â I said. Mostly being supportive. My friend was worth several billion dollars. An extra ten million was like change in most peopleâs pockets.
âAnd youâre married already?â London said, with a level of incredulity behind the voice. Although, I saw a ring on her finger as well. The last time we met three months ago, she wasnât dating anyone. I was certain weâd hear the whole story before our meals were delivered.
Trista flashed her rock. Not that she needed to. The sun glistened off it and was blinding my eyes since I was sitting across from her. Good thing I was wearing sunglasses. That and the glasses covered the dark bags under my eyes that makeup didnât cover from three straight months of crying myself to sleep at night.
The crying was taking a toll on my eyes. The ones Mark said were my best feature.
